BAPTIST CHURCHES IN POLAND

Kraków - in the south. The former capital of the Polish kings. Fortunately it was spared extensive destruction in the last war. The church is located in a historical bldg.

The basement has a drop-in centre for youth. The services are on the first floor and are attended by people of all ages but with a majority of young adults.

Poznan - in the west has a great university that I attended before the war. The present church is housed in a small ex-funeral chapel. The congregation is aiming at getting the pre-war Baptist church building back.

The church has a impressive youith and career group that meets on Saturdays for praise, worship and fellowship and serves on Sundays with testimonies and music.

Gdansk - the largest city in the north on the Baltic sea. The church building has the appearance of an apartment block (a church style approved by the communist government of the 60-ties.) I was there during a communion service. The wine is served in a silver chalice . The elements are received while standing up. The congregation are mostly young and mature adults with children and teenagers. Music is enhanced by piano and other modern instruments.

On every Saturday a group of young people is serving a hearty soup with rolls preceded by a testimony and prayer by one of the young people. Some of the attendees are in the church on Sunday. The bookstore is open every Sunday after the service and is operated by the young people. This church has now expanded into Gdansk II, the southern area of the city, which is now fully operational and a third church is being planted in the northern area, the town of Sopot, a resort town on the Baltic. During the summer this town triples in size to about 100,000.- people. A young American missionary of Polish descent (3rd generation) and his Polish wife have started a new church which has already purchased a building in a good location of the city.

Warsaw- the Capital of Poland. The first church was built in 1964. The two Baptist Churches that existed before the war were destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising. While I was a guest of the Union of Baptists in Warsaw I was told about the construction of an Educational Center of the Union which is located in the green belt of the city, 15 km outside of Warsaw in a village called Radosc (in Polish "Joy")
